Stephenville was named after John M. Stephen. Stephen settled in Stephenville in 1854 and donated the land. The town site was laid out by George B. Erath in 1856 when the county was organized. The town site was successful in its first two years of settlement and by 1858 the population has reached 776. Unfortunately, Stephenville was located in the heart of Comanche territory and raids occurred frequently. The hardships of the American Civil War also took their toll on Stephenville, forcing many citizens to leave. Until 1871 the Stephenville population was in decline. The population started to rise when Stephenville became an agricultural center. In 1886 coal mining came to be an important aspect to the area’s economy, and continued to be for the next three decades Stephenville was established in 1889, when the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway arrived. During the 1890’s many of the buildings in the town square were built, and Tarleton State University opened. Stephenville’s two newspapers merged and became the Empire-Tribune, which is still the major newspaper in Stephenville today. In the 20th century industry became an important factor in Stephenville’s economy. The population has been steadily increasing since the 1920s.
